God Is The God Of Our Comfort

II Corinthians 1:3-4 "Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God."

Our comfort comes from God and not man.

I know that I go through things at times and I have the tendency to seek comfort from my husband or from friends. The truth is that my husband nor my friends can comfort me like my Heavenly Father can. He is the "God of all comfort". My husband has tried to comfort me at times...and I appreciate that. That shows he cares. I've had friends and people in our church that have tried to comfort me...and I appreciate that. It shows they love me and they care for me. But the truth is that no one can comfort me like God can. He sweeps in when I'm talking to Him about a matter and He gives me just what I need. He gives me peace and that comforts me. He lets me know that He is there with me and going through that situation with me. That comforts me.

There will be people that say "I understand what you are going through" or "I sympathize with you" but have never been through what I am going through. Those are nice words and I know they are trying to comfort me with those words. But the truth is that they can't possibly know or understand unless they have been in my shoes. And even if their situation was similar to mine they aren't me and couldn't possibly know how I'm feeling as I'm going through my situation. God knows exactly how I'm feeling at the time and He understands why I feel the way I do.

The thing to remember as we go through our trials is that God may not make our situations any better but He will give us the peace to make it through till the end. I really don't know how I made it through so many years of my life without the Lord. Thank the Lord I have Him to help me make it through now.

If you don't know the Lord Jesus Christ as your personal Saviour...just know that He loves you so much He was willing to die on the cross for your sins. Yes...you are a sinner!! And He desires to save you. Romans 5:8 says "But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us." Know that He rose again on the third day after His death and that He is seated in Heaven right now making intercession on your behalf. If you will just call on His name with your whole heart and repent of your sins or just make a change in direction in your heart and live for Him then He will save you and you too can have that promise that He will comfort you in your times of trouble.

I am so thankful that God saved me and one of the many benefits that came along with that salvation was comfort from the Lord, Himself. He blesses us in so many ways, I don't see how anyone lives without Him. connie from Texas

I love this scripture--and you are so right--only the Lord knows exactly *how* to comfort us. We have lost a lot of loved ones in our family and at times the grief has been almost unbearable--but this scripture and the truth of it has been made so real in the midst of difficult times.

sis. mishel....it truly is a blessing to have God's comfort in those times.

I love the fact that Jesus (when on earth) was a man of sorrows and aquainted with grief. That means He can identify with all that I am going through - and is the best person to offer me whatever comfort I need. I love the definition of comfort: ones who comes alongside with strength!

Truly, our Lord is the God of all comfort!

This is something I really need to remember too. It is lovely when friends and family comfort us and I really believe that we can show God's love in our lives by loving others. But as you say we shouldn't be seeking comfort from people but from God, He is the only one who really understands.

Blessings and hugs.

You are so right Julie. God is the only true comforter as He knows the beginning and the end already in our lives.

Sis, what an awesome post! It is amazing how God speaks to us as well. I just heard a sermon about this very subject the other day. I am so thankful that God is always here when I need Him and when I am in need of being comforted! Thank you for this post!

Mrs Julie great post! I am so glad that when man can not comfort and you are right there are times he can't that God will comfort you. I know when I am going through those times of feeling like no one understands that God reaches down and gives me a great big hug. What a blessing.

Yes! Yes! Yes!

I do believe it is a matter of growing in Christ to learn to turn to Jesus first. It is indeed the old man that craves the opinion's of others and drives us to run to that old telephone the minute we have something to share.

It has taken time, but I have learned to run to the Lord with the burdens of my heart. Because I was raised in a Godly home, it took a conscious effort on my part to quit picking up the phone and calling mom first thing with any news ... good or bad. I realized I was elevating her to a position that she should not have (and did not ask for). I have learned instead to run to my private sanctuary and drop to my knees before the throne.

I know this will make for a long comment ;o) but I just had to include the words to one of my most favorite hymns (and you know that says a lot for me). This hymn goes along with your devotional thoughts just perfectly!

I Must Tell Jesus

I must tell Jesus all of my trials;
I cannot bear these burdens alone.
In my distress He kindly will help me;
He ever loves and cares for His own.

I must tell Jesus all of my troubles;
He is a kind, compassionate Friend.
If I but ask Him, He will deliver,
Make of my troubles quickly an end.

O how the world to evil allures me!
O how my heart is tempted to sin!
I must tell Jesus, and He will help me
over the world the vict'ry to win.

chorus:
I must tell Jesus! I must tell Jesus!
I cannot bear my burdens alone;
I must tell Jesus! I must tell Jesus!
Jesus can help me, Jesus alone.

Text and Music: Elisha A. Hoffman, 1893

Bless you, Sis. Julie. What a precious reminder this post has been to me of our sweet Lord's care of us.
