Psalm 145:3 "Great is the LORD, and greatly to be praised; and his greatness is unsearchable."
God is certainly great and His greatness is beyond our human knowledge. There are no words that can adequately describe His greatness. Because His greatness is beyond human knowledge we need to do like David and bless (speak well of) God and praise Him for His greatness.
There are so many reasons why God is great. In verse 8 "The LORD is gracious, and full of compassion; slow to anger, and of great mercy" David lists a couple of reasons. One is because of His grace. His grace is what saves us and it is what brings us through each and every trial we go through.
Next he mentions His compassion. It was His live and compassion that led Him to die on the cross. Let me interject right here and say that if we are to follow Christ's example then we need to have compassion on others. Don't get me wrong...we love others but do we have compassion? A person can love others and not have compassion for them but a person cannot have compassion without love.
Then he mentions that He is slow to anger. I'm so glad that God is slow to anger. I tend to be hard-headed about some things and it takes me a while to learn. Thank God that He is slow to anger.
Then lastly David mentions God's mercy. Mercy is simply God holding back what we deserve. He has mercy on the saved and the unsaved. I deserved before I got saved...and I still deserve....to be in Hell with my back broke. But God's mercy kept me from going there before I was saved and it's His mercy and grace that keeps me from going there now.
Just thinking about these few things that David mentioned...how can any of us say that God isn't great? He most certainly is!!!
There are so many reasons and ways that He is great....to mention all of them would take forever. But let me encourage each of you to take some time today and spend time telling Him how great He is and why. If you begin with those mentioned in this post today I am sure that you won't be able to stop there.
